Egyptian visit to be shared

David Loar to share Feb Egyptian Visit
Written by David Loar
Sunday, 30 April  2006

The Rev. David Loar of Fairlawn-West United Church of Christ will share about his experience in Egypt in February of 2006 as he visited
Christian churches and peoples who were helping to change their communities and their nation in a much more retrestrictive setting than Christians have in the USA.  This will be on Sunday, May 7, 2006 beginning at 5:30 pm with a potluck supper followed by pictures and narration by Rev. Loar.  Everyone is invited to both the potluck and the presentation.

Loar was part of a group of 9 Northeast Ohio clergy who traveled to Egypt and were hosted by CEOSS, Coptic Evangelical Organization for Social Service.  CEOSS was shaped and guided with a major influence from the Rev. Dr. Harry Eberts, Jr, former minister of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Akron and former Executive Director of the Akron Area Association of Churches.  The group that Loar was part of is funded by the the Lilly Endownment and sponsored by the Akron Area Association of Churches for three years to look at ways to help transform the church.

With far less resources and social/political clout in their culture, the Protestant Christian Church in Egypt is doing amazing things to help people face very austere conditions.  They have no access to the national governmental or political process and yet they are offering spiritual strength through worship, schools, medical clinics, changing the status of women, and working with low-income communities.

The Fairlawn-West Church building is at 2095 West Market Street in west Akron, next to the park with the Chief Rotaynah carving and in front of the new Judith A. Resnick Community Learning Center, the former Fairlawn Elementary School.  For more information you can call the church office at 330-864-2179 or visit the web site at fairlawnwest.org.

Fairlawn-West United Church of Christ will host a Garage Sale for its Kids Hope USA ministry on Saturday, May 6, 2006, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.  Kids Hope USA is a national ministry based in local Christian congregations of providing mentors/tutors for children in elementary school that are at risk.  The garage sale will be in the Fellowship Hall of the church building.

Fairlawn-West started its Kids Hope USA ministry in February at Fairlawn Elementary School.  Presently there are 6 mentors each paired with a student.  There are also additional people who serve as substitutes if the regular mentor can't make their weekly meeting with the student.  Already in this short time it is clear that these children are growing from these new relationships.

Here is the web site for the national Kids Hope USA.  Here is the web site for the Fairlawn-West ministry.

Written by David Loar
Monday, 17 April  2006

Fairlawn-West United Church of Christ will celebrate Earth Day on Saturday, April 22nd with a gathering for a prayer for the earth at 1:00 PM.  There will then be a "hike" around the neighborhood between Sand Run Road and Pershing Avenue to collect litter along the streets.

Conversations at Fairlawn-West include now looking at alternative forms of energy for the church building and doing more environmentally sensitive landscaping around the building.

The Hiking Group at Fairlawn-West will be hiking the O'Neill Woods trail on Tuesday, May 2nd.  Hikers meet in the church parking lot at 9:00 AM.  The Hiking Group hikes the 1st, 2nd, and 5th Tuesdays of the month as well as the 3rd Sunday afternoon of the month.

The Canoe Group will be on their 6th annual trip this summer on the Buffalo River National Scenic Riverway in northwest Akrkansas.  They will be canoing and camping the week of June 26th.  Previous rivers they have been on are the Current River in the Ozarks of Missouri, the upper Allegheny River in Pennsylvania, and the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River in KY & TN.

Good Friday labyrinth

Good Friday Labyrinth
Written by David Loar
Friday, 7 April  2006

Fairlawn-West United Church of Christ invites the community to the indoor labyrinth walk on Good Friday, April 14th.  The labyrinth will be in the Fellowship Hall from noon to 7:00 pm.

The Fairlawn-West labyrinth is based on the style of the historic labyrinth at Chartres Cathedral in France.  A labyrinth walk offers the individual a time of prayer to deepen their relationship with God.  The person may be seeking to find clearness in their life, share in simple prayer conversation with God, or enter deeper into the mystery of God.

There will be people available at the Fairlawn-West labyrinth to introduce and guide those who are new to the labyrinth experience.

At 7:30 pm the church will have its Good Friday service of Tenebrae or "the shadows" in the sanctuary.

Fairlawn-West Church is at 2095 West Market Street in west Akron, next to the park with the Chief Rotaynah carving and in front of the new Judith A. Resnick Community Learning Center, the former Fairlawn Elementary School.  For more information you can call the church office at 330-864-2179 or visit the web site at fairlawnwest.org.
