Its Lent - so what?

What's Lent? An old thing that some church folks have hung on to all these years? Our ancestors saw it as a gracious moment for 40 days to focus more intently and clearly on who is God, what is God doing, what is my life doing with God and what is God doing with my life, what is God doing with the part of the Christ's body where I serve? Find out more about Lent...

So what do you think? Is Lent for you? Why or why not?

Comments:
When I was a kid, Lent was about "giving up" something (candy) and putting the money into a little box so we could ransom a "pagan baby" Five dollars got you one baby baptism. The money of course went to the missions. I don't know that my zeal for converts was equal to my love of M&Ms. But maybe I helped.

A friend at work said she was planning to do something rather than give up something. We talked about soup kitchens.

The scripture reading for today from Isaiah talked about empty fasts and about justice for the poor.

An empty fast might be going to Red Lobster because you are going to give up meat for Lent. Better to get the hamburger and donate the difference to the food pantry.

What do you all think?
